I think in order to get one of those free 30-day accounts on AOL, you have to give a credit card number. If AOL can do it, it's probably legal. My guess is that it's probably not illegal to ask for a credit card number up front. But I hope someone will speak up if they think I'm wrong. (I hope my credibility isn't undermined because I know something about AOL accounts. I had some AOL users I had to support at one point.)
